Connect Astra MCP to your AI tool

Last updated: November 2, 2026

This article lists the steps to connect Astra MCP to ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, VS Code and other AI tools that support remote MCP servers.

Before starting

  • An Astra account that can sign in to the dashboard at my.getastra.com. If two-factor authentication is on, access to the account email is needed for the 8-digit verification code.

  • An AI tool that supports remote HTTP MCP servers with browser sign-in, such as Cursor, VS Code, ChatGPT, Claude Code or Claude Desktop. Use the latest version of the AI tool.

  • A network that allows access to mcp.getastra.com and mcp-auth.getastra.com. A VPN, proxy or company firewall can block the connection.

  • The server URL:

https://mcp.getastra.com/mcp

Connect an AI tool

ChatGPT Web

  1. In ChatGPT, open Plugins from the sidebar, click Add (+) and select Add Custom MCP Server.

  2. Enter Name: Astra MCP. Under Connection, select Server URL and enter https://mcp.getastra.com/mcp.

  3. Set Authentication to OAuth, accept the risk acknowledgment and click Create as a plugin.

  4. On the Connect Astra MCP screen, click Continue to Astra MCP and complete the sign-in in the browser. Astra MCP is connected once the authorization succeeds.

ChatGPT App

  1. Open ChatGPT Settings, search for MCP and go to Plugins + MCP. Select Add Custom MCP Server.

  2. Enter Name: Astra MCP, select Streamable HTTP as the connection type, enter https://mcp.getastra.com/mcp as the server URL, and save.

  3. Back in the MCP settings, find Astra MCP and start the connection. ChatGPT opens the Astra sign-in page in the browser. Sign in, allow access, and return to ChatGPT.

  4. Check that Astra MCP shows as connected in the MCP settings. Its tools are then available in supported ChatGPT conversations.

Claude Desktop

  1. Open Claude Desktop and go to Customize > Connectors.

  2. Click + Add Custom Connector. Enter Name: Astra MCP, paste https://mcp.getastra.com/mcp as the URL, and click Add.

  3. Select Astra MCP and click Connect. Complete the sign-in in the browser. Claude returns to the app once connected.

Cursor

  1. In Cursor, open Cursor Settings and go to Tools & MCP. In newer versions of Cursor, this is under Customize.

  2. Add the Astra MCP server. Paste this configuration into the MCP settings (mcp.json), and restart Cursor if prompted:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "astra": {
      "url": "https://mcp.getastra.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}
  1. Start using the assistant. When Cursor asks to authenticate, complete the sign-in in the browser as described in Sign in and allow access below.

VS Code

  1. Open the Command Palette with Cmd+Shift+P on macOS, or Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows and Linux, and run MCP: Add Server.

  2. Choose HTTP (HTTP or Server-Sent Events).

  3. Paste the server URL https://mcp.getastra.com/mcp and press Enter.

  4. Enter astra as the server ID.

  5. Choose Global to use Astra MCP in every VS Code window, or Workspace to use it only in the current project.

  6. Trust the server when VS Code asks, then click Allow when VS Code asks to authenticate to Astra MCP. Complete the sign-in in the browser.

  7. To confirm the connection, run MCP: List Servers and select astra. The server shows as running, and the Astra tools appear in the Chat view. Show Output opens the server log.

The server can also be added to a configuration file. VS Code uses servers as the top-level key, not mcpServers, and the server will not start without "type": "http". A workspace configuration lives in .vscode/mcp.json:

{
  "servers": {
    "astra": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.getastra.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Claude Code

  1. Run this command in the terminal:

claude mcp add --transport http astra https://mcp.getastra.com/mcp
  1. If Claude Code does not pick up the new server, restart Claude Code.

  2. Run /mcp in Claude Code, select astra and complete the sign-in in the browser.

  3. Check the connection:

claude mcp list

Other AI tools

Astra MCP works with any assistant that supports remote HTTP MCP servers and browser-based OAuth sign-in.

  1. In the tool's MCP or connector settings, add a new HTTP server with the URL https://mcp.getastra.com/mcp.

  2. Sign in with the Astra account when prompted. Access matches what that account can see in Astra.

Note

Tools that only accept a fixed API key or token, with no browser sign-in, cannot connect to Astra MCP at the moment. See Astra MCP FAQ.

Sign in and allow access

The first time the AI tool connects, it opens the Astra MCP sign-in page in the browser.

  1. Sign in with Email and Password, or with Sign in with Google or Sign in with Microsoft.

  2. If two-factor authentication is on for the account, enter the 8-digit code from the Enter Email Verification Code screen. The code is sent to the account's registered email address.

  3. On the Allow access page, review what the app may do: Verify who you are, Basic profile, Email address and Keep you signed in.

  4. Select I understand and accept these terms and click Allow access. The button stays disabled until the box is selected.

  5. The browser shows Authentication Successful and the AI tool is connected.

Tip

Only approve the Allow access page when the sign-in was started from the user's own AI tool. After the first sign-in, the AI tool renews access in the background, so the sign-in is not repeated every session. If the saved sign-in stops working, the AI tool asks to sign in again.

If the connection fails, see Fix the "Not found" error on the Astra MCP sign-in page or Fix Astra MCP connection errors.
